Combining CBD & Melatonin For A Good Night Sleep

You are one of the lucky ones if you are getting a good night’s sleep. Lots of Americans aren’t.  In fact, a study[1] conducted a few years ago by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that one third of Americans are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. Lack of sleep can lead to a number of chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and even mental distress. This is in addition to slowed thinking, reduced attention span, lack of energy and other symptoms that impact your performance during the day.

It’s not only that Americans aren’t getting enough sleep; they aren’t getting enough quality sleep. When you wake up feeling exhausted the next day, it impacts your mood and ability to think clearly. The National Sleep Foundation[2] defines quality sleep as:

  • Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 percent of the total time)
  • Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less
  • Waking up no more than once per night
  • Being awake for 20 minutes or less after initially falling asleep.

Getting to Sleep Naturally with CBD

To fall asleep and stay asleep naturally, some consumers are turning to natural substances such as cannabidiol (CBD)versus prescription or over-the-counter drugs. CBD is one of the over 60 cannabinoids or naturally occurring chemicals found in industrial hemp and marijuana that interact with natural receptors in the brain and body to affect pain response, among other effects. Melatonin is another natural substance many rely on for sleep issues. Melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced primarily by the pineal gland, which is located in the brain. (The pineal gland got its name from its pine-cone like shape.) Melatonin regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle, which is why it’s often called the “sleep hormone.”

Your body’s internal clock, which is also known as the circadian rhythm, affects how much melatonin the pineal gland produces. When it begins to get dark, melatonin levels begin to increase and stay high to let you know it’s time to go to sleep.  Conversely, light suppresses the production of Melatonin. So, when the sun rises, melatonin levels decrease, letting your body know that it’s time to wake up.

Evidence suggests that melatonin supplements promote sleep and are safe for short-term use.[4] These supplements work by activating the melatonin receptors in the brain, known as MT1 and MT2 receptors.[5]

Taking CBD with Melatonin

There are a number of similarities between CBD and Melatonin when it comes to affecting sleep. Both CBD and Melatonin have been shown to have an impact on the sleep-wake cycle. Also, the MT1 and MT2 receptors and CB1 and CB2 receptors that influence sleep are both part of the same group called G-protein coupled receptors. This connection between the two natural substances suggests they are complementary in aiding quality sleep. [6]
