WHY CBD

WHAT IS CBD (CANNABIDIOL)

CBD is one of more than 80 active cannabinoid chemicals in the hemp and marijuana plant. Unlike the main cannabinoid in marijuana, CBD does not produce euphoria or intoxication. When applied to the skin or taken orally, CBD binds to the body’s own CB2 receptors. Once it connects with these receptors, CBD has stress-reducing, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects on the body. CBD is known to ease symptoms of arthritis, anxiety and chronic pain. Because it does not interact with the brain to create any psychological effect, CBD in not mind-altering or habit-forming. There is growing evidence that CBD also acts on other brain signaling systems and this action may be an important contributor to its therapeutic effects.

CBD is generally well tolerated with a remarkable safety profile. Some use CBD as an adjunct to their pain medications and some have been able to eliminate many of their medicines completely. Non-mind-altering and not habit-forming, you can use it whenever you need it without worrying about side-effects.

To date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.

CBD’s Long History

CBD dates back to the 19th century when it was used by Queen Victoria for menstrual cramps. But, it was not until the 1980s that studies indicated that CBD could alleviate certain types of pain, anxiety and discomfort.

In 1998 a pharmaceutical company began to cultivate cannabis for medical trials. They believed that cannabis plants rich in CBD could be used for medicine. Early animal studies showed that CBD lessened anxiety and reduced the frequency and severity of seizures. Cannabis strains began to be cultivated with extremely low levels of THC and high levels of CBD.

In 2010s the public began to see the profound effect CBD could have on treating a variety of life-threatening ailments, especially in children. In 2013 a 3-year-old girl who suffered 300 grand mal seizures every week was administered CBD and this was able to treat 99% of the young girl’s seizures. CNN aired a 2013 special on marijuana and its medicinal effects and CBD came to the forefront.

Today CBD is recognized as a justifiable therapy for a variety of ailments. As a result, it is rapidly becoming more accepted in numerous clinical studies and as a part of treatment plans. Research continues to support its legitimacy and programs are being funded globally to continue its studies.
